EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
